Hello, my name's Alex and I'm 14. I just recently decided to be a vegetarian because my best friend is one and she showed me a horrible movie where they played the song Free Me by Goldfinger. It was really sad. So I need help getting started. I've gone to some sites and looked at vitamins I'll need to get and some substitute protiens. But if anyone would be willing to help me out by giving me recipe links or anything of the sort I'd be extremly greatful. Thanks a bunch!

Intro [Jul. 13th, 2005|05:25 pm]
Vegetarians,Vegans,and Omnivores

Hey, my name is Kathryn and I'm sixteen. My younger sister (age 13) and I have been vegetarians for about a year. Since then I haven't eaten meat at all and only had fish twice. I'd like to be vegan but love chocolate too much and my mother needed lots of persuasion to let me become vegetarian so I don't think she'd take to kindly if I became completely vegan. Saying that, I don't eat a whole lot a dairy anyway.

Quorn is ok but we have these vege burgers which are absolutely gorgeous! I've never tasted tofu. What's it like?

Anyway, nice to meet you all!

 K x

Guava Duff [Jun. 24th, 2005|10:08 pm]
Vegetarians,Vegans,and Omnivores

[Current Music |CNN]

My mother is Bahamian, and this is one of the best recipes I grew up with. It usually has a little rum in it, but we never used any.

Guava Duff

12-15 large guavas
3 cups flour
4 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup butter
1/4 cup vegetable shortening
2 eggs, separated
2 teaspoons vanilla

Core and peel guavas. Rub cores through sieve to obtain some of the pulp, and mix with cut up guavas. Add sugar to taste.

Beat butter and shortening with the sugar, then beat in the egg yokes. Sieve flour, baking powder, and salt; fold in. Add vanilla. Divide dough into 3 balls. Place in refrigerator for 1/2 hour until firm.

Spread out each of the balls on a piece of foil; cover with guava. Starting from one end, fold into roll. Cover with foil, then place in baking bag and seal. Boil for 1 hour in a large pot with hot water. Slice and serve warm with butter sauce.

Butter Sauce

1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup butter
2 egg whites
2 teaspoons vanilla

Beat egg whites in dish until foamy. Cream butter and sugar in a separate dish until sugar has dissolved. Gradually add egg whites and vanilla; continue beating till smooth. Add to top of warn guava duff when serving.

I got this from Lj animal_rights....

From the Peta website:

"Please forward widely.

Last year, Steven Richard Schatz, 38, of 9701 Longview Dr., Ellicott City, was charged with felony cruelty to animals stemming from his alleged systematic April 2004 beatings and sodomy of his then-girlfriend's cat, Clyde. According to court records, Clyde was found suffering from blunt-force traumas on numerous occasions that month, including severe ocular hemorrhages, liver trauma, and seven broken ribs. Clyde's rectal muscles were also found to be flaccid, consistent with his having been sodomized. A digital recorder placed in his guardian's home later reportedly captured Clyde rhythmically screaming in obvious agony and Schatz yelling at the animal. Three months later, Clyde had to be euthanized because of his injuries.

On May 27, The Baltimore Sun reported that Schatz had been convicted of the charges and faced three years in prison.

Despite prosecutors' reported request that Schatz be given 18 months in jail, Judge Neil Axel instead apparently sent the felonious animal abuser to jail for just 90 days. Handcuffed and being led out of the courtroom, Schatz allegedly told the cat's guardian, "This is going to come back to you, in some way or form."

Please let Judge Axel hear from you. Inform him that further crimes are the rule rather than the exception among animal abusers and that this is especially true among so-called "zoophiles". Politely suggest that His Honor's decision may well have jeopardized the safety of the community at large and its animals."

It is imperative that all correspondence be dignified and polite, or our campaign will suffer:

The Honorable Neil Edward Axel
Associate Judge of District Court, Howard County
3451 Courthouse Dr.
Ellicott City, MD 21043

Vegan Creamy Miso-Potato Soup [May. 22nd, 2005|05:15 pm]
Vegetarians,Vegans,and Omnivores

Everyone's favorite basic miso soup!

Creamy Miso-Potato Soup

8 cups water (3 qts.)
12 medium potatoes (3 lbs.)
4 carrots
1 onion
1 garlic clove
Soup greens (celery tops, parsnips, parsley, and/or cabbage cores)
1 envelope Miso-Cup dissolved in 1 cup of vegetable broth

Scrub and quarter potatoes. Scrub carrots. Peel onion and garlic. Clean and cut soup greens and necessary. Place all vegetables in water and cook for about one hour or until potatoes are tender. Remove pot from heat. Take one cup of broth and dissolve one envelope of Miso-Cup into it and set aside. When soup has cooled, remove and discard soup greens. Remove carrots, slice and set aside. Puree potatoes with remaining water and replace pureed mixture into soup pot. Add sliced carrots and miso mixture. Heat for a few minutes and serve.

Variations: Add 2 cups cooked corn kernels, whole peas, or sprouted lentils.

Greetings :) [May. 3rd, 2005|08:24 pm]
Vegetarians,Vegans,and Omnivores

Hello everyone. My name is Mary, I'm gonna be 20 in 2 months, and I've only been vegetarian for about a month, but I plan on sticking with it. It took me a while to get my parents to accept the idea, which is why I didn't become vegetarian sooner. I don't eat eggs and I drink Silk instead of milk and use vegan buttery spreads instead of butter, but there are a few things--like my protein bars that contain dry skim milk. So I can't call myself vegan, but it's only been a little while, in time I may be able to get away from dairy all together. I donate to PETA and have always been against fur, and the like even when I wasn't able to go vegetarian. I recently put the "IAMS Tortures animals in tests" stickers on all the IAMS food in my local supermarket, as well as passing around informational pamphlets on the topic. My college is covered in goveg.com stickers and I put peta business cards in lockers as I pass them :P I decided to join this community, for obvious reasons, and because this community seems very welcoming and positive. Nice to meet you all!
